Recruitment

Alpha Phi is a diverse group of girls, ranging in age from 18 to 22 and hailing from all across the country. Alpha Phi's participate in the full spectrum of sports teams, activities, and interests. There is no Alpha Phi “type;” it is impossible to characterize us simply and with only a few words. Thus, Alpha Phi is interested in every girl who participates in recruitment.

Recruitment at MIT is held at the end of orientation before classes start. MIT has six sororities, all of which attract girls every year and continue to grow. MIT is also a Panhellenic school, meaning that recruitment is a carefully structured process. A girl must look at all six sororities before ultimately choosing one at the end of the recruitment period. For this reason, it is important that all girls interested in recruitment should sign up through the Panhellenic Site

Going Greek in general is often a difficult decision for girls, since they might not know much about Greek life. Over half of freshman girls last year, however, decided to go through recruitment. The benefits to going Greek are endless: most sororities at MIT offer living options off campus, providing a close-knit group of friends and a personalized living environment. Getting to know upperclassmen through a Greek organization also has social and academic benefits: mixers help introduce Greek groups to each other, and upperclassmen can often help younger students through classes they have already taken. In fact, the overall Greek grade point average is a 4.3 on a scale of 5, compared to the non-Greek average of 3.9. Though going Greek may not be the best choice for everyone, we certainly feel it was a good decision for us.

The details about belonging in and living at Alpha Phi can be found on the many pages of this website. However, a website can only be so helpful, and so anyone who has questions about being in Alpha Phi or the recruitment process in general should feel free to ask. Our sisters can be found all over campus: many TA classes or tutor outside for them, and we have athletes in varsity volleyball, softball, field hockey, gymnastics, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, ice hockey, and cross country. Our girls participate in every Dance Troupe Show, and are involved in many other clubs and groups at MIT.  Just look for our letters on campus, or feel free to email the Vice President of Recruitment, Jamie Curran, at jkcurran@mit.edu, for more information.

Meet the VPR

To the women of the class of 2014, welcome to MIT! I encourage you and all unaffiliated women to consider participating in formal recruitment this fall. In recruitment, you will get to know all of MIT's sororities and find out what the Alpha Phi experience is all about.

As the Vice President of Member Recruitment, I focus on creating a fun Recruitment week for both potential new members and our sisters. The rest of the recruitment team and I are working to prepare the chapter, and we can't wait to meet all of you.
